Target audience analysis-social networks

The Task:

In order to have a wider understanding of the audience that The Fergies attract, I looked into how (as a group) their social networks present them, and what kind of people they attract in the process.

One major example of this was on FaceBook. It became apparent, that their audience (age wise) where teenagers. Their age range (as the image suggests) is between the ages of 13-17, suggesting that they are rather young teens, reaching the peak of maturity. This creates the view that they are impressionable and vulnerable (those of 13) and (those of 17) are just on the verge of securing their identity. This created a clear view for us, the producers to find ways to appeal to the teenage audience and would benefit us as we (myself and the rest of my group) would understand what would appeal to them, due to us being the same age range (and to some extent) caliber as their Niche.

Their Twitter, on the other hand, showed that they where quite popular, with more people following them than they are following another. Moreover, they seem to be quite active in their account, frequently updating at any given situation, and suggests, like most teens, they are 'addicted' to the internet and may be appealing to young people.  Moreover, their popularity may also be what young people may find attractive, and suggests that these individuals who like them, may like the prospect of being part of the "popular crowd" , further fuelling that idea that they may be insecure, and desire to be part of a unique group of people, and may try to emulate them in order to "fit in".
Furthermore, looking on their Instagram page, there was further evidence that they appealed to young girls especially. this is because there where several comments underneath that stressed how lovely certain members looked, or how they where an inspiration. Moreover, in pictures where one (or more) of the boys are seen, it commonplace to find girls (especially) commenting on their looks. This further fuels the idea that the main audience is teenagers, or more especially, teenage girls.
Their own Youtube, stresses how much attention they get as a group, with over 1'000 people subscribing to this page alone, suggests that they have a rather wide Niche, in comparison to other artists, and suggests that they are dedicated to their music.
Their own website is very simple, and not over complicated or too "flashy", creating a rather humbling look about them and their music. It is, also, very well organised with all the essentials needed for any Fan page, which further gives them the out look of well organised and influential group of young people. Which may (indirectly) influence other young people to aspire to be like them.

In conclusion, in doing this task I have learnt the type of niche The Fergies attract, and in finding this out, i will be able to manipulate this information into incorporating our work (Digipack, Website and music video) around this, at a later date. This will allow us to understand and immediately apply what has been discovered. From all that I have seen, I have concluded that The Fergies Niche is somewhere between Scene Kids, and Hipsters, in that they have a unique look, and that they do not follow mainstream society. Furthermore, in the information i have gathered, it is clear that the Fergies are quite well established in their local music industry, and with their constant us of social media to help promote themselves, it is clear that they have used this to their advantage to build their Niche. Moreover, the fact that their Youtube page alone has so many views, likes etc, it emphasises (stereotypically) that their appeal is to Scene Kids, as they are especially addicted to social media, with Youtube a main hot spot.

Digipack Task

This is my digipack task in which I chose to recreate 50 Cents Curtis album cover which I found fun and interesting editing my picture in photoshop to look like the original 50 cent cover. The hardest part was copying and then blending in the tattoo and the bracelet, but the experience has given me competence in going and using photoshop in the future. .

50 Cent  rapper with his image of a modern day gangster of the streets with the typical rags to riches story, the tough guy look the album cover conveys all goes along and is fully congruent with how his image is sold to his audience. This is something I need to think about when marketing The Fergies. - the band we are creating a music video for.

I also copied and distorted the bracelet and tattoo from the original picture to blend it into my picture, through using the distort and wrap effects.

I also changed the picture to the original dimensions in which most cd covers use being 500x500.

This task has been good practice in preparing me for further editing of pictures that I will need to do when creating the image for the band The Fergies that we are working with. It also helps me see the way I need to think about how I am going to package and sell the band and what type of image I am going to do that with.

0:15 - 0:20 - The band appear more prominent during the chorus.

0:29 - The man getting fired from his job, due  to his gambling addiction.

0:40 - He continues to gamble even though he has lost his job and has a family at home - hedonistic lifestyle.

02:43 - The man seeks redemption for his gambling by going to the church, and refers back to the first shot of the bible and money.

02:53 - The man holds the fixation to his gambling habits.

02:57 - By throwing away the money, he is symbolically throwing away his gambling addiction.

Goodwin Analysis of Charlotte Hatherly - BASTARDO

Music Video Analyse 1: Charlotte Hatherley.
2. Lyrics & Visuals. (Can be too literal)
4. Demand of the Record Label. AKA Image.
5. Intertextuality.

3. Music & Visuals. (Interpretation. Atmosphere and mood)

6. Notions of Looking.

1. Genre Characteristics.
NOTES:
Lyrics are presented in a crossword, comic or magazine form. This links to the overall concept of the video, of what you'd typically find in a magazine. This as demonstrates hyper-realism as the girl "comes to life". The editing used helps illustrate the relationship between music and visual, as the turning of pages speeds up in time with the music, or altogether closes when the music stops. A guitar solo is also featured, proving that Charlotte can actually play her instruments. Lip syncing is also used. The video itself does not fit a stereotypical genre. The video takes the ideology of a pop artist and music and makes it comical. Being ironic. However the girl herself has a rock look. Alternative Pop. Shots of bars and alcohol are used, this establishes her age. We believe the audience is teen girls who are insecure and experimenting with their identity.

We did this short task to revise our analytical skills and our knowledge of Goodwin's theory.

Girl Band Analyse. RD

HIP HOP.  URBAN.

The girl band RD have a hip hop/urban image. Wanting to be presented as tough girls, they portray themselves as so in their music video "Do It Like Me".
The location varies between buildings and scenes in Camden. In one scene the girls are dancing on a rooftop with London's attractions in the background. This gives the impression that they are just shy of the outskirts of London, portraying that they are outcasts and live outside of the box. As showing London creates their identity as British Artists. Unground clubs are also feature, illustrating the working and lower class.
The girls are also presented as very dominate and sexualised females. Scenes are shown of the girls boxing and walking into the underground club without problems. To gain access to those types of clubs, you must have a certain level of respect and contacts. They are also sexualised in their clothing choices, wearing tight and revealing clothing such as crop tops. The clothing choices also reflect the hip hop genre, with one of the girls wearing s snapback and gold jewellery.
Graffiti is featured throughout, a characteristic of the hip hop sub culture. It promotes the idea of criminality and the girls being tough.
The video is very fashion and dance based. A dance/rap off is shown in the club, along with a dance routine they perform at every chorus. while the girls and continually changing clothes throughout the video. Over-all; the audience they are targeting is mid-teens, male and female.
